What do our labels mean?

WAZA presents sustainability as part of its work to promote the sustainable use of natural resources and to help zoological organisations and their visitors take better care of the planet. It says the global community of zoos and aquariums has the capacity to reach more than 700 million visitors annually and works with businesses, government agencies and other partners. WAZA has also published a sustainability strategy for 2020-2030 and a range of guides on single-use plastic, responsibly sourced forest products, sustainable palm oil and carbon reduction. Its stated focus includes responsible consumption, industry standards and environmental awareness.

Signed sustainability MoUs

Through three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), WAZA is working to promote sustainable and responsible consumer consumption, improvement of industry standards and environmental awareness. These MoUs are: Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) – WAZA MoU on sustainable palm oil. Signed: 19 October 2017. United Nations Environment – WAZA MoU on marine plastic pollution, protecting coral reefs and reducing the demand for wildlife products. Signed: 27 September 2017. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) – WAZA MoU on responsible management of forests. Signed: 24 October 2018.
