Certified as a B Corp

The Sussan Group, which includes Suzanne Grae, says it is a certified B Corp. B Corp is a certification for companies that meet set standards on social and environmental impact, accountability, and transparency. The group says the certification covers environmental, social, and governance factors, not just profit. It also says B Corps must recertify every three years, which is meant to push ongoing improvement.

Cut greenhouse gas emissions

The group says it reduced its total greenhouse gas emissions by 23% between 2022 and 2023. Greenhouse gas emissions are the gases that trap heat in the atmosphere and drive climate change. The company presents this as part of its wider decarbonisation work, meaning efforts to lower the carbon pollution linked to its business and supply chain.

Tracks supplier water data

The group says it collects water-use data from its direct suppliers and has set water reduction targets. It also says almost its entire Sussan range is made from locally sourced premium Australian cotton. The company adds that irrigated Australian cotton now uses less water and fewer chemicals than it did 30 years ago, which it uses to support its sourcing approach.

Improved packaging performance

In 2022, the group says it reached 'advanced' status with the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation, or APCO, a not-for-profit group that works on better packaging and a circular economy for packaging in Australia. The company says it publishes its APCO status every year and keeps working through the seven APCO criteria.

Joined Seamless for circularity

The group says it is a foundation member of Seamless, an industry initiative that aims to build a circular clothing system by 2030. Circular means keeping clothes in use for longer instead of sending them to landfill. As part of this work, the group says it is helping other retailers divert 120,000 tonnes of end-of-life clothing from landfill by 2027.

Published reconciliation work

The group says its Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan was formally endorsed by Reconciliation Australia in 2023. A Reconciliation Action Plan, or RAP, is a public plan that sets out how an organisation will support reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The company says it is also using training and workshops to build cultural knowledge.

Raised funds through partnerships

The group says it has partnered with Breast Cancer Network Australia since 2005 and has raised more than $11 million AUD through its community partnerships. This is a social impact action rather than an environmental one, but it shows the company is also active in community giving and long-term charity support.
