Mental health awareness content

It’s a common misconception that 90% of suicides are caused by mental illness and can therefore be prevented by treating or reducing mental illness. However, only about 46% of Americans who die by suicide have a known mental health diagnosis at the time of death (Bryan, 2022). Prevention strategies must therefore not only target the individual (e.g. mental health initiatives) but also the environment (e.g. bridge barriers and firearm restrictions). Shifting from pathologizing terms to person-centered, compassionate language helps clients feel seen, respected, and understood.

In this area, great progress has been made but mental health care comes at a cost. Most individuals who access mental health care are able to afford the services and treatment needed to get better. This begs the question, what about mental health support to people from disadvantaged communities who cannot afford or access services?
