Midfield Trading Sustainability Actions

Formal sustainability strategy

Midfield says it has formalised its sustainability work into a group strategy with six pillars: people, animal welfare, partners and prosperity, quality and safety, environmental stewardship, and community. It says the plan is built around 2030 goals and is linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The company also says it used the Australian Beef Sustainability Framework and the Australian Dairy Industry Sustainability Framework when setting the strategy. This shows a structured approach, but the detail is mostly self-reported.

SBTi net zero approval

In August 2024, Midfield says its net-zero emissions targets were approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi, a group that checks whether climate targets match climate science). It says it became the first animal source food production company in the world to receive this approval. The company says its targets are based on a 2022 emissions baseline and are aligned with a 1.5°C pathway, which means they are meant to help limit global warming to that level.

Set emissions reduction targets

Midfield has published near-term and long-term emissions targets. It says it will cut absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by FY2030 and by 90% by FY2050. It also says it will cut Scope 1 and 3 FLAG emissions, where FLAG means forest, land and agriculture emissions, by 30.3% by FY2030 and 72% by FY2050. It adds further Scope 3 targets for purchased goods, transport, waste, and leased assets. These targets cover a wide part of its footprint.

Waste and water trials

The company says it follows the waste hierarchy, which means reduce, reuse, then recycle. It has set a goal of zero liquid waste from operations by 2025 and zero solid waste to landfill by 2030. Midfield says organic processing waste is composted at its EPA-registered compost facility and returned to farms as soil conditioner. It also says it is trialling wastewater treatment and algae-based bioremediation, a method that uses living organisms to clean waste, to improve water quality and reduce methane.

Native tree planting

Midfield says its Native Revegetation Program began in 2002 and now plants about 15,000 trees each year on its properties. It says the trees are used in shelterbelts and in planted areas near waterways to support biodiversity and healthier ecosystems. The company also says it works with a local wildlife rehabilitation centre and uses some plantations to help reintroduce wildlife. This is a long-running land management action tied to habitat and biodiversity protection.
