Matalan says its ESG programme measures its impact on the environment and society and aims to be transparent about how the business is run. Its work is focused on four areas: Planet, People, Product and Good Business. The company says it is reducing its reliance on plastic, working to reduce energy use, improving responsible sourcing, and introducing more circular business models. It also states that it maintains ethical standards across its supply chain, offers fair and rewarding work for colleagues, and puts ESG at the heart of the business with accountable leaders and reporting on progress.

Matalan Sustainability Actions

Responsible sourcing policy

For nearly two decades Matalan has maintained a robust ethical sourcing policy and a lot of work has been put in to ensure our supply chain is transparent and closely monitored. We recognise that what is normal business practice in one country may not be acceptable in another, nevertheless Matalan is committed to conduct its business in an honest and ethical manner.

Better Cotton membership

Matalan is a proud member of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), the largest cotton sustainability programme in the world. Through the fees we pay for sourcing BCI Cotton, we contribute to the funding of field-level projects and farmer capacity strengthening through BCI Growth and Innovation Fund (GIF).

Ethical supply chain monitoring

Matalan is a member of the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (Sedex) and uses the Sedex platform to carry out due diligence before starting work with a factory. Based on the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) Base Code, independent auditors carry out in-person visits to factories to assess their performance against Matalan’s standards.

Bangladesh Accord signing

Matalan signed the Bangladesh Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh and the more recent 2018 Transition Accord and is committed to working with the Steering Group to help achieve its goals.

Reusable carrier bags

Everyone at Matalan takes our responsibilities to the environment seriously. Our every day carrier bags are re-useable. We will also replace any carrier bags free of charge as and when a new bag is needed, customers just need to return them to us and we will in turn recycle them as part of our commitment to minimise our environmental impact.
