Waste audits improved sorting

In 2023, La Vie en Rose started annual waste audits at its head office and distribution center. The audits helped the company spot where waste was being sorted badly. It then changed the layout of sorting stations, improved signs, and made waste-sorting training mandatory. The company says these steps raised the correct sorting rate in its offices and lunchroom from 35% to 83% in one year.

Composting food and office waste

In 2022, the company installed a composting machine at its head office. It uses it for cafeteria food scraps and compostable office materials. The compost must be kept free of contaminants, especially plastic, so it can be used properly. The finished compost is then given to Cuisine Collective Hochelaga-Maisonneuve for use in community food gardens.

Recycling with Cascades

Since 2005, La Vie en Rose has worked with Cascades, a recycling company, to handle non-reusable commercial packaging waste at its distribution center. It reuses cardboard boxes when it can, then sends worn-out boxes for recycling. In 2012, it expanded the partnership to include clear plastic waste such as polybags and stretch film, which are compacted and recycled instead of going to landfill.

Reusing hangers at scale

Since 2014, the company has used reverse logistics (a system that brings used items back into the supply chain) for clothing hangers. Usable hangers are returned to manufacturers and used again when new stock is packed. La Vie en Rose says it has recirculated more than 7,800,000 hangers through this system, which helps extend product life and reduce waste.

Reusable bags in stores

Since 2023, La Vie en Rose has encouraged shoppers to bring reusable bags to its stores. If customers need a bag, the company sells a reusable canvas tote made from polyester sourced from recycled PET bottles. It says the money from these bag sales is donated to organizations that work on nature conservation.

Donations to conservation groups

In 2025, the company said it gave $800,000 to five Canadian environmental conservation groups, with another $200,000 in early 2026, for a total commitment of $1 million. The supported groups include Nature Conservancy of Canada, Appalachian Corridor, Tree Canada, AquaAction, and Ducks Unlimited Canada. The projects mentioned cover habitat protection, wildlife crossings, tree planting, water innovation, and wetland restoration.

Joined Cascale and Higg Index

In December 2021, La Vie en Rose became a member of Cascale, a nonprofit industry group that promotes more sustainable business practices. It also added the Higg Index, a set of tools used to measure environmental and social performance, into its corporate social responsibility work. The company says it uses the tool to review environmental impact, working conditions, and governance, and to work with manufacturers on better practices.

Supply chain code and due diligence

La Vie en Rose says it uses a Partner Code of Conduct to set expectations for suppliers on human rights and labour conditions. It also says its Supply Chain Transparency report covers human rights due diligence, which means checking for risks to workers and trying to address them. The company presents this as part of its wider supply chain governance work.
