Koos Service Design is a Dutch service design agency that presents sustainability as part of its core practice. It describes service design as a method for solving complex problems and says it has dedicated its expertise to creating a sustainable world, including people, society and the planet as stakeholders. Its sustainability approach is framed around designing sustainable behaviour, circular services and resilient systems. Koos also says it started sustainability efforts internally, worked to reduce its carbon footprint, and is aiming to become Climate Neutral Certified. The agency applies sustainability across projects, proposals and ideation, and has worked on circular economy and public-space projects.

Koos Service Design Sustainability Actions

Reduced its carbon footprint

Sustainability efforts from Koos started internally. Michaël and his colleagues took it upon themselves to reduce Koos’ carbon footprint, and it was a hands-on, unsure experiment at first. “We were all thinking about how we, as Koos, could reduce our impact on the environment” Michaël says. After a few years of trial and error, they now have a strategy in place.

Developed Sustainable Service Design

Koos describes Sustainable Service Design as a three-pronged approach: designing sustainable behaviour, designing circular services, and designing resilient systems. In order to shift to a sustainable world, “first we had to define what sustainability means”, says Michaël. Koos decided to highlight where it could make an impact as a service designer.

Worked on circular economy projects

After collaborating on projects contributing toward a circular economy, Koos said it realised it knew a lot about it. Its experience told it that Service Design has the right tools to make this transition concrete and successful. The page also cites projects such as “From a linear to a circular renovation process in urban water management” and “Co-creating a toolkit for municipalities to increase circularity in public spaces.”

Integrated sustainability in projects

Koos says it aims to integrate environmental and social sustainability into every project, instead of only for clients who want to design sustainable services and systems from the outset. It asks, “How can Koos incorporate a sustainability perspective?” and says it tries to mention sustainability in everyday conversation, in proposals and during ideation sessions.

Used stakeholder process tools

Koos developed a new tool called the “Process Journey”. “A Process Journey is like somewhere between a customer journey and a service blueprint. This tool is useful to visualise a multi-stakeholder process and align them”. It says this helps create a common understanding of the problem and how to solve it on a systemic level.
