Published an ESG report

Hut 8 published its second annual Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report in July 2023. The report covered environmental, social, and governance data, including information from its high-performance computing business for the first time. It said the company wanted to reduce its environmental footprint, improve transparency, and track progress on issues like waste, safety, diversity, and energy use. The report was prepared using SASB and GRI guidance, which are reporting frameworks that help companies present sustainability data in a more standard way.

Cut waste and use cleaner power

In its 2022 ESG report, Hut 8 said it diverted more than 94% of waste from landfills, up from 61% in 2021. It also said it used carbon instruments to offset 40% of its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, which are the direct emissions from its operations and the emissions from purchased electricity. The company reported that its data centres in Ontario and British Columbia used grids that were 94% and 97% carbon-free. It also said it renovated a data centre with LED lighting and reused materials.

Tracked diversity and safety

Hut 8 reported zero total recordable workplace safety incidents in 2022. It also said 43% of executive management roles were held by women and 29% by BIPOC people, meaning Black, Indigenous, and people of colour. On governance, it said 40% of board seats were held by women and 40% by BIPOC people. The company also completed its first diversity and inclusion survey to better understand the make-up of its team. These steps show that it was measuring workforce and board diversity, not just environmental data.

Joined climate and ethics frameworks

MAN said it joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2021, which is a group that helps companies set emissions cuts in line with the Paris Agreement. It also said it is a member of the UN Global Compact, a UN-backed business network that asks companies to follow basic principles on human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption. MAN also said it uses a supplier code of conduct and monitors environmental impact with third-party consultants. These are governance and supply-chain steps meant to make its sustainability work more structured.

Built community sustainability programs

Burning Man Project described several sustainability programs for Black Rock City and other community spaces. These include the Net Zero Black Rock City initiative, the Black Rock Compost Program, the BLAST camp sustainability rating system, and the Green Corridor. The organisation also said it is working on decarbonising event operations, expanding solar use, and helping camps reduce waste and emissions. It also supports climate-resilient systems at Fly Ranch and community-led sustainability work through Burners Without Borders and regional groups.
