Henkel Sustainability Actions

Published 2024 sustainability report

Henkel published its 2024 sustainability report and said it was the first one to follow the content rules of the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD, a law that pushes companies to report more clearly on sustainability) and European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS, the detailed reporting rules). The company said the report showed progress in climate, circular packaging, equal opportunities, and fair working conditions. It also said it introduced an extra annual check to make sure pay stays aligned with local living wage benchmarks, which are basic pay levels needed for a decent standard of living.

Cut emissions in production

Henkel said it reduced carbon dioxide emissions from production per ton of product by 64% compared with 2017. It also said it increased the share of energy bought from renewable sources to 47% by the end of 2024, and later reported 97% renewable electricity globally in 2025. These steps are part of its wider climate work to lower emissions across its own sites and supply chain. The company says it is using energy efficiency, cleaner power, and supplier engagement to keep cutting emissions over time.

Expanded recycled packaging use

Henkel reported that recycled plastic in its consumer goods packaging rose to 25% in 2024, with a later update saying the share reached 28% in 2025. It also said 89% of consumer packaging was designed for recycling by the end of 2024, and 88% by 2025 depending on the reporting cut-off. The company gave examples such as liquid hand soap packaging made from 100% recycled plastic in North America and higher recycled content in some European detergent and hair care packs. This is part of its circular economy work, which means keeping materials in use for longer and reducing waste.

Set up packaging recyclability labs

Henkel said its Packaging Recyclab sites in Düsseldorf and Shanghai test whether packaging can be recycled more easily. The company also said the Shanghai site received cyclos-HTP accreditation, which means an outside specialist checked that it can carry out EU paper packaging recyclability tests and issue recognised reports. Henkel says these labs help it and its customers design packaging that works better in recycling systems. It also said its adhesive technologies can support recyclable packaging by helping different materials stay easier to process.

Improved gender balance and leave

Henkel said women made up 42% of management in 2024 and more than 43% by the end of 2025. It also introduced gender-neutral parental leave of at least eight weeks with full pay worldwide for all family types, including adoptive, foster, LGBTQ+ and single-parent families. The company said more employees took parental leave after the policy was introduced. These actions sit under its social goals on equity, fair pay, and a healthier working life.

Expanded supplier sustainability checks

Henkel said it carried out more than 24,000 Together for Sustainability (TfS) assessments and audits in 2025. TfS is a cross-company program that helps chemical and consumer goods firms check supplier practices in areas like safety, environment, and labour. Henkel also said it uses supplier engagement to collect emissions data and reduce scope 3 emissions, which are the indirect emissions that happen in the wider value chain. The company says these checks help it push higher standards across its supply chain.

Joined long-running sustainability groups

Henkel said it has been part of several industry groups for years, including the U.S. Plastics Pact, the Renewable Carbon Initiative, FTSE4Good, Responsible Care, WBCSD, and the Climate Pledge. It also said it works with How2Recycle to help consumers recycle selected products. These memberships show that the company is involved in wider industry efforts on plastics, climate, chemicals, and reporting. Some of these groups are collaborative networks, while others are labels or index memberships that signal outside review.
