Fortescue Sustainability Actions

Launched Real Zero plan

Fortescue says it has already started its Real Zero plan, which is its roadmap to stop burning fossil fuels across its Australian terrestrial iron ore operations by 2030. Real Zero means cutting emissions directly instead of using voluntary carbon offsets, which are credits bought to balance out emissions elsewhere. The company says the plan is already underway and includes changes to how it powers, moves, and runs its operations.

Built renewable rail power

In 2026, Fortescue began commissioning battery electric locomotives on its Pilbara rail network. The trains use renewable electricity from its Pilbara Energy Connect system, which combines solar, wind, transmission lines, and battery storage. The company says the locomotives should replace about one million litres of diesel each year and help cut emissions from heavy-haul rail.

Opened a training centre

Fortescue opened its Power Up Training Centre in Perth in 2026 to help build the electrical skills needed for its move to electrified operations. The centre is meant to support the workforce needed for its Pilbara decarbonisation work. This is part of the company’s wider effort to prepare staff for a lower-emissions business model.

Published sustainability reports

Fortescue has published a range of sustainability documents, including sustainability reports, climate transition plans, climate change policies, emissions calculation methods, and country-by-country reports. These documents show that the company is reporting on its environmental and social performance and on how it plans to manage climate risk and emissions.

Invested in community support

Fortescue says it has awarded A$7.6 billion in contracts to First Nations businesses through its Billion Opportunities program and has made A$99 million in social investment. It also reports First Nations employment and female leadership figures on its sustainability page. These actions point to work on local economic participation and social inclusion.
