Universal Store Sustainability Actions

Built a fibre strategy

In 2023, Universal Store developed a preferred fibre matrix. This is a guide for choosing materials that it sees as lower impact, such as organic cotton, recycled fibres, linen, hemp, and some lower-impact viscose options. The brand also launched an online responsible product edit that was filtered through its certification process. In the same year, it calculated a baseline carbon footprint, which is the starting point for tracking future emissions cuts.

Changed packaging policy

In 2024, Universal Store adopted a new sustainable packaging policy. It also joined Seamless, a membership group focused on packaging and circularity, which means keeping materials in use for longer instead of throwing them away. The published material does not give full details of the policy, but it shows the brand has started to address packaging waste more directly.

Expanded certified sourcing

Universal Store says that in FY26, 52% of the fibres it bought were preferred fibres. It also says more than 60% of its cotton was certified to an organic standard and more than 25% of its polyester was certified to a recycled standard. The brand says certification helps verify that materials meet set rules at different stages of the supply chain, which is the path a product takes from raw material to finished item.

Worked on animal welfare

Universal Store says it has an animal welfare policy based on the Five Freedoms, a widely used animal welfare framework. It says animal-derived materials are rarely used in its range, and when they are used, the brand only stocks products that meet its policy. It also says it looks for responsibly harvested and certified animal products, including certified down and wool.
