Circular economy work with The Good Shop

Since 2021, Tropic Knits has supported The Good Shop Mauritius, a social enterprise that works on circular economy projects. Circular economy means keeping materials in use for longer instead of throwing them away. The company donated industrial sewing machines, leftover fabric, and thread. It also ran a donation drive at its headquarters, where employees gave unused items to be upcycled, which means turned into new products instead of becoming waste.

First industrial solar water heaters

The company says it began its environmental work in 2008 by installing solar water heaters at industrial scale in Mauritius. Solar water heaters use energy from the sun to heat water, which can reduce the need for fossil fuels. This is presented as the first step in its wider effort to make textile manufacturing less harmful to the environment.

Published an environmental report

Tropic Knits published an environmental report to explain its progress and climate plans. The report says the company is focusing on four areas: natural resource use, climate change, healthy and sustainable living, and sustainable production and consumption. It also says the company wants to work with other parts of the industry to support decarbonisation, which means cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Science-based climate target work

The company says it has committed to science-based targets, which are emissions goals based on climate science rather than guesswork. It also says it is working on a plan to reach climate neutrality across its supply chain by 2040, in line with a 1.5°C climate pathway. A supply chain is the full chain of people and businesses involved in making a product, from raw materials to delivery.
