Tony’s Chocolonely presents itself as an impact company with a mission to end all forms of exploitation in the cocoa industry and make all chocolate 100% slave free. Its sustainability approach focuses on cocoa sourcing from Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, traceability from bean to bar, paying higher prices and premiums to farmers, and working through Tony’s Open Chain with other brands. The company also links its work to deforestation-free sourcing, child labour reduction, and broader SDG priorities including poverty, hunger, decent work, reduced inequalities, responsible consumption and climate action.

Tony’s Chocolonely Sustainability Actions

Sourced cocoa from Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire

Tony’s Chocolonely deliberately chooses to source cocoa from Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, where more than 60% of the world’s cocoa is produced and where some of the biggest challenges lie.

Bought traceable cocoa beans

All the beans used to make Tony’s cocoa mass and cocoa butter are 100% traceable, purchased directly from partner cooperatives in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

Paid premiums to farmers

In addition to the Fairtrade premium, Tony’s pays a living income premium to enable cocoa farmers to earn a living income from the cocoa they sell. The premium helps increase income and reduce outgoings by supporting agricultural training courses, nurseries for new cocoa trees, bulk fertiliser purchases, central water pumps and more accessible education.

Worked with partner cooperatives

The cocoa farmers Tony’s sources from are affiliated with partner cooperatives, including Kapatchiva, Ecojad, ECAM and Socoopacdi in Côte d’Ivoire and ABOCFA, Asetenapa and Asunafo in Ghana.

Sold 13.3 million kg of chocolate

Last financial year, Tony’s sold 13,347,031 kg of chocolate. The company says growth enables it to work with more farmers who benefit from its playbook for a fairer cocoa supply chain and to make more noise in the chocolate industry.
