The Root Co Sustainability Actions

B Corp certified

As of February 2024, The Root Co. is officially B Corp Certified. Certified B Corporations, or B Corps, are companies that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

Direct ginger sourcing

The five ingredients that go into each of our drinks are all single-origin, and we are proud to include that detail on the back of every can. The Root Co. directly imports fresh Tanzanian Ginger straight from ONE smallholder farm in Mkomazi. We've now visited our farmers, Dan & Juma, twice. After our visit in March 2025, we summited Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise money for equipment upgrades at their farm. We donated >£2.6k for sprinklers, hoses and tarps.

Uses aluminium cans

We use aluminium cans for our drinks as it is the cleanest and easiest-to-recycle packaging available, requiring 60-90% less energy than bottled recycling. They're lighter and more packable than glass too, which makes our cycling easier.

Reuses ginger pomace

When you juice as much Ginger as we do, you end up with a by-product of semi-dry, organic pulp matter (the more fibrous parts of ginger root). Luckily, this stuff makes a great natural fertiliser. Our juicing partner in Nairobi, Orchard Natural Products, ensures that this pomace is taken to smallholder farmers in Kenya to keep our process as circular as possible.

Cut emissions from freight

We have recently cut down on c.80% of our carbon emissions from sourcing our ginger by using sea freight rather than air freight to transport our frozen juices. In June 2025, we filled a whole 40ft sea container with 80 drums of frozen juice and sent it on its way from Mombasa to Southampton.

Delivers by bicycle

Cycling is our go-to fulfilment option in London. We can carry nearly 50kg of Ginger Beer between us, and we’re often found zooming around town with very large yellow backpacks on.

JEDI principles

The Root Co. aims to build a better world. We are a small UK ginger beer start-up, but our supply chain is global. Our suppliers, customers and employees span several communities, and our decisions influence people's opportunities and experiences day-to-day. We are especially accountable to our farmers and their communities in East Africa, whose livelihoods do, in part, stem from our sourcing of ginger. We recognise the power imbalance between supplier (farmers) and customer (us) in this context. We aim to treat all of our stakeholders with respect, recognising that some may face barriers, e.g. opportunity, income, disability and language. We incorporate these principles of fairness into every policy and decision we take.

Human rights commitment

The Root Co. is committed to respecting human rights, as set out in the UN Declaration on Human Rights, UN Guiding Principles and Human Rights, International Bill of Human Rights and ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.

No lobbying

The Root Co. does not engage in lobbying and does not intend to apply pressure to local or central government to further its business goals.
