Soft Landing Mattress Recycling Sustainability

Soft Landing Mattress Recycling is an Australian social enterprise that collects and recycles end-of-life mattresses. It says it is Aboriginal-led, not-for-profit, and a registered charity. Its main sustainability focus is keeping mattresses out of landfill and recovering materials like steel, foam, and timber for reuse. It also links its work to social impact by creating jobs for people facing barriers to employment. The company says it uses local suppliers where possible and prefers manual dismantling over mechanical shredding so it can support more jobs. It also reports holding ABSC approval and ISO certifications for safety, environmental management, and quality.

Recycled millions of mattresses

Soft Landing says it has recycled more than 2.3 million mattresses in the last five years and diverted over 40,000 tonnes of waste from landfill. It collects old mattresses and breaks them down so materials can be reused instead of thrown away. The company says this helps reduce landfill pressure and keeps steel, foam, and timber in use for longer.

Created jobs through recycling

The company says it created 291 employment opportunities in FY25. It also says 75% of its team joined while facing disadvantage, which means they had barriers that can make it harder to get work. Soft Landing uses manual dismantling rather than full mechanical shredding so it can create more jobs while recycling mattresses.

Earned ABSC approval

Soft Landing is approved by the Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC), a product stewardship body that helps the bedding industry move toward a circular economy, meaning products and materials stay in use for as long as possible. The ABSC says Soft Landing meets strict criteria for safe and environmentally responsible collection, storage, and recovery of end-of-life mattresses.

Achieved ISO certifications

In February 2026, Soft Landing said it achieved ISO certification across occupational health and safety, environmental management, and quality management. ISO standards are international rules that help organisations manage risk, reduce harm, and keep processes consistent. This suggests the company has formal systems in place for safety, environmental impact, and service quality.
