Published first ESG report

The company released its first ESG report, called "Building a Better World 2021." ESG means environmental, social, and governance, which is a way of tracking how a business affects the planet, people, and its own oversight. The report set out progress already made and gave new goals for water, energy, materials, and social programs. It also created a cross-functional ESG working group and steering committee under board oversight, which shows the topic was moved into formal company management.

Cut water use in denim

The company said it reduced water use per pair of jeans by 36% and later by 38% in 2022, beating its first water target early. It also reported recycling 45% of water in denim factories and saving billions of gallons of water since 2017. The Water Leadership Program and wastewater standards were used to guide factories and mills on water reduction, recycling, and safer wastewater handling.

Expanded Real Good products

The brand’s Real Good label marks products made with more sustainable materials or in factories that meet its water standards. The company said the label covered 95% of jeans and more than half of American Eagle and Aerie styles. It also said some products use recycled fibers, Better Cotton (a program that supports more responsible cotton farming), organic cotton, recycled polyester, recycled nylon, and sustainably sourced man-made cellulosic fibers.

Joined industry measurement tools

The company joined Cascale in 2016 and uses the Higg Index, a set of tools for measuring factory environmental impact, to track water and carbon data across more than 400 factories, laundries, mills, and trim suppliers. In 2024, it collected Facility Environmental Module self-assessments from suppliers covering more than 90% of procurement volume, with an 89% verification rate. This shows a more structured approach to checking supplier impacts, even though the data still comes from company-managed reporting.

Used circular denim design

The company developed a limited denim collection using the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign project. The project follows circular economy ideas, which means clothes are designed to last longer, be reused more, and create less waste. The source says the collection used guidelines aimed at making jeans recyclable and long-lasting, which points to a move away from the usual short-life fashion model.

Backed social programs

The company renamed its scholarship for social justice as the Steven A. Davis Scholarship for Social Justice and said it had a $5 million commitment behind it. It also reported donations of more than 40 million meals to Feeding America over two years and more than $46 million since 2012 to groups focused on mental health, youth empowerment, education, and the environment. These actions show that its ESG work includes social giving as well as environmental work.

Improved reporting transparency

The company said it released a second ESG report with more transparency and reporting aligned to SASB and TCFD. SASB is a framework for reporting industry-specific sustainability issues, and TCFD is a climate disclosure framework. The company also said MSCI upgraded its ESG rating from BBB to A, which suggests outside analysts saw improvement in how it manages ESG risks and disclosures.
