Shrimp Welfare Project focuses on shrimp welfare across the farming and harvest cycle, with an emphasis on humane slaughter, electrical stunning, and evidence-based improvements in aquaculture practices. Its work includes providing electrical stunners and implementation support to producers, supporting retailers in developing shrimp welfare policies, and contributing to academic research on shrimp sentience and slaughter methods. The organisation also runs programmes for corporate engagement, smallholder farmer support in India, and research and policy work. Its stated approach is to help the shrimp farming industry improve welfare at every step of the way.

Shrimps Sustainability Actions

Launched Humane Slaughter Initiative

Since we started the Humane Slaughter Initiative in 2022, we’ve visited dozens of farms across geographic regions to see what works best on the ground.

Installed new stunners

Shrimp Welfare Project: 2025 Corporate Impact Metrics reflect where the shrimp sector is heading. This year, Shrimp Welfare Project installed 7 new stunners, turning corporate commitments into practical welfare improvements on farms.

Supported farmers on site

Supported producers in the Humane Slaughter Initiative by providing equipment and technical training across 15 field visits. Worked on the ground with more than 40 farmers to gather data and refine shrimp welfare protocols.

Worked with retailers

We also support retailers in developing shrimp welfare policies and help connect them with suppliers and producers, so they can turn corporate commitments into practical changes in their supply chains.

Joined ASC working group

We were a part of the Technical Working Group for ASC’s new Farm Standard, which—for the first time—includes electrical stunning as an approved method of stunning for shrimps and other crustaceans.

Shrimps Sustainability Commitments

2026

Expand humane slaughter research

We’re currently collaborating with academic researchers in an effort to get more peer-reviewed scientific data on electrical stunning. The early results are promising, and ongoing work will continue to inform how we can help producers implement humane slaughter in different farm contexts.

2025

Grow retailer commitments

This year, Shrimp Welfare Project celebrated 6 new retailer commitments in the UK and Europe, as consumers increasingly expect shrimp welfare policies from their supermarkets.

2025

Scale corporate impact work

Industry progress happens when data and implementation go hand in hand. Our 2025 Corporate Impact Metrics reflect where the shrimp sector is heading and the innovations made through collaboration with producers, suppliers, retailers, and researchers.
