Scotch & Soda Sustainability Actions

Used lower-impact store features

In 2021, Scotch & Soda said new store designs would include some lower-impact features. These included LED lighting, FSC-certified wood flooring, and hangers made from recycled materials. FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, a group that certifies wood and paper from more responsibly managed forests. The company also said a new warehouse in Hoofddorp would have solar panels on the roof and vertical gardens with automatic watering. These changes point to efforts to reduce energy use and improve building design, although the source is a company press release rather than an independent audit.

Launched recycled-material bags

Scotch & Soda introduced new bags as part of a brand update in 2021. One of the bags was made with recycled nylon, while others used faux leather. Recycled nylon is nylon made again from waste material instead of new fossil-based feedstock. This is a product-level change, not a full sustainability strategy, but it does show the brand using some lower-impact materials in selected items. The same release also said the brand was expanding its lifestyle range, so the recycled material was part of a wider commercial launch rather than a standalone environmental programme.

Released a Dutch wool capsule

In 2022, Scotch & Soda launched a limited-edition capsule collection made from 100% Dutch wool. The items were made with locally sourced wool and alpaca yarn, and the yarns were described as natural and undyed. The collection was developed with the Knitwit Stable and knitted in Italy. Using local wool can reduce transport needs and support regional supply chains, but the source does not give full life-cycle data or prove a lower total footprint. It is best read as a material choice within a small collection, not proof of a broader shift across the whole brand.

Expanded recycling and donation

ULAC, the company that now handles Scotch & Soda distribution, said it recycled 615 pounds of textiles in 2023 through work with nonprofits such as FABSCRAP. It also said this helped avoid about 5 tons of carbon dioxide. Textile recycling means turning old fabric into new material or keeping it out of landfill. The same update said apparel donation programmes also help divert waste from landfill. This is a useful waste-reduction step, but the figures cover the wider company group rather than Scotch & Soda alone.

Increased FSC packaging use

ULAC said it increased the share of FSC-certified paper and recycled plastics in packaging from 21% in 2022 to 35% in 2023. It also said it recycles all corrugated boxes in its warehouses, which it described as 100% landfill diversion for that material stream. Corrugated boxes are the thick cardboard boxes often used for shipping. These changes suggest progress on packaging waste, but the company still said it wants to go further, so the current level is not the final target.

Started supplier impact tracking

In 2025, ULAC said it adopted Worldly’s Product Impact Calculator to measure supply chain greenhouse gas emissions more quickly. Supply chain emissions are the pollution created by making and moving products, not just by a company’s own offices or stores. The company said the tool would help it use primary data from the Higg Facility Environmental Module, a system for checking environmental performance in factories. This suggests a move toward more detailed emissions tracking, but it is still a measurement step rather than proof of emissions cuts.
