Certified B Corp recertification

Sama announced its successful recertification as a Certified B Corporationâ„¢, with an overall B Impact score of 118.4, up from 98.5 at initial certification in 2020. The company said the recertification reflects progress across governance, workforce development, community impact and environmental stewardship.

Reduced carbon emissions

Sama’s 2024 Impact Report said the company achieved a 17.1% reduction in absolute carbon emissions from the 2023 baseline, advancing its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validated targets.

Increased renewable electricity

The company reported that 23% of global electricity was sourced from renewables, supported by partnerships with San Francisco’s CleanSF program and Kenya’s Malindi Solar Farm.

Expanded digital work access

Through its purposeful hiring model, Sama says it has connected more than 13,000 individuals to dignified digital work. The company says it is committed to minimizing barriers to formal employment for historically marginalized groups, especially women and youth living below the international poverty line in East Africa.

Adopted impact sourcing standard

Sama was an early adopter of the Global Impact Sourcing Coalition’s Impact Sourcing Standard to demonstrate its commitment to inclusive employment. As part of the standard, Sama adopted requirements that provide pathways for low-income jobseekers to gain employment and advance their careers.

Published CSR audit results

Sama said it scored 98.6% in a CSR audit and that the auditing company decided to use the result as its new benchmark for CSR assessments for other data labeling businesses. The audit covered fair labor and standards, health and safety, environmental protection, human rights, legal compliance and anti-corruption.

Supported micro enterprises

Through the Leila Janah Foundation, Sama provides funding and mentorship to small social enterprises in Kenya and Uganda. The Foundation’s Give Work Challenge has funded 29 small businesses and provided mentorship and other supports founded and/or led by Sama employees.
