Published first Impact Report

Room & Board shared its first ever Impact Report and said it was making measurable commitments to design more sustainable furniture and to improve its impact. Over the last year, it said it had made progress on its initial goals, including sustainably sourcing 85% of its wood, hitting 70% renewable electricity use in its stores and operations, and contributing 2% of profits to nonprofits across the country.

Became a Certified B Corporation

Room & Board went through the certification process in 2023 to become a B Corporation. The company said it changed its articles of incorporation to say that it will take into account all stakeholders and not act on just profit, but think about staff, community and the environment.

Transitioned to employee ownership

On April 25, 2024, Room & Board announced its transition to a 100% Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), giving its 1,100 employees a financial stake in the company. The company said the move was intended to preserve its business values of respect, accountability, transparency and collaboration, and to take care of the people who helped make the company successful.

Established staff benefits

Room & Board said it has a long history of championing staff member well-being, including establishing a company wage of $45,000 for all full-time employees and pioneering same-sex partner benefits over 30 years ago.

Created sustainability governance

Third Partners said it worked with Room & Board on its first sustainability assessment, benchmarking, staff surveys and stakeholder interviews, and then developed a roadmap for managing sustainability issues. The work included working groups for supplier risk engagement, renewables and other key operation areas, and delivered Room & Board’s first carbon footprint study and a cross-functional ESG governance strategy.
