Piercing Pagoda Sustainability Actions

Joined UN Global Compact

Signet Jewelers, the parent company of Piercing Pagoda, joined the UN Global Compact in 2021. This is a global business initiative that asks companies to follow basic rules on human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. The company said this was part of a wider push to link its business plans with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, a set of global goals for people and the planet).

Published 2030 sustainability goals

In 2021, Signet released 2030 Corporate Sustainability Goals. The company said the plan covers 44 goals across people, team, planet, and products. It also said the goals include climate change, human capital, and supply-chain work. One stated aim is to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, which means balancing the greenhouse gases it adds to the air with removals or cuts elsewhere.

Reported conflict minerals checks

Signet said it filed its eighth straight Conflict Minerals Report in 2021 and that each report was backed by an independent private-sector audit. Conflict minerals are raw materials linked to conflict and human rights abuse in some regions. The company said its supply of the covered minerals came from conflict-free sources in the Democratic Republic of the Congo supply chain, and that its Responsible Sourcing Protocol has guided due diligence for years.

Expanded responsible sourcing share

SustainabilityTracker reported that in fiscal 2024, 85% of all Signet jewelry was sourced from Responsible Jewellery Council members. The Responsible Jewellery Council is an industry group that sets standards for responsible business in the jewellery sector. Signet said it wants that share to reach 100%, which suggests it is still working to move more of its supply chain into that system.

Improved packaging materials

Signet said it increased recyclable content in its packaging in fiscal 2024. It reported gains in both paper-based and plastic-based packaging. Recyclable content means the material can be collected and processed again after use, though that does not always mean every package will actually be recycled in real life. The company also said some packaging, such as Rocksbox mailers, uses reusable and recyclable parts.

Ran repair and reuse program

Signet said it used its Reclaim, Reuse, Re-Sparkle program to collect and work on used jewellery. In fiscal 2024, it reported nearly 97,000 trade-ins, more than 61,000 carats of diamonds recovered, and $20 million in recovered metal. It also said it customised and repaired 3.7 million pieces. This points to a circular economy approach, which means keeping products and materials in use for longer instead of throwing them away.

Created a giving foundation

In 2021, Signet launched the Signet Love Inspires Foundation. The foundation funds non-profits that support underserved women and children and groups that work on equality and social change. It also offers matching gifts for employees. This is a community-impact action rather than a direct environmental step, but it still sits within the company’s wider ESG work.
