Orba Shoes says it created the Orba Ghost as an everyday sneaker made from plants rather than plastics. The shoe uses materials such as flax, kenaf, ramie, cork, coconut husk, agave sisal, natural latex, rice husk ash, and organic cotton. The brand says this design avoids petroleum-based synthetics, solvent adhesives, synthetic dyes, metals, and other materials it sees as harder on the environment.

Published carbon footprint data

The brand says it measured the carbon footprint of a pair of Orba Ghost sneakers at 7.8 kg CO₂-equivalent. It says this figure was calculated by Carbon Trail using an ISO 14040/14067 cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment, which is a method that checks emissions across a product’s full life. Orba also says this is lower than the footprint of a typical synthetic running shoe and a typical leather shoe.

Tested biodegradation

Orba says it had the shoe tested by Scion Labs using ISO 14855, a standard for checking how materials break down in compost-like conditions. The brand says the shoe can biodegrade over time once shredded and placed in the right environment. It also says it avoids calling the shoe “fully biodegradable” because the standards do not require 100% mass loss, and it wants to be precise about what the testing shows.

Used certified bio-based materials

Orba says over 95% of the Orba Ghost is bio-based and that this was verified by USDA certification, a label that checks how much of a product comes from renewable biological sources. The brand also says its laces and stitching are certified organic cotton. It presents these material choices as part of its effort to reduce reliance on fossil-based inputs.
