Officeworks Sustainability Actions

Published sustainability reports

Officeworks has published a series of sustainability reports and updates covering 2019-2020 through 2025. These reports show that the company tracks its progress over time and shares updates on its People & Planet Positive strategy. This kind of reporting helps readers see what the business says it is doing on climate, waste, sourcing, and community impact.

Reached 100% renewable energy

Independent coverage says Officeworks hit its 100% renewable energy target in 2024, with 170 stores expected to be powered by renewable electricity by January 2025. Renewable energy means power from sources like wind or solar instead of fossil fuels. This is a major step for cutting emissions from its direct operations.

Expanded recycling programs

Officeworks runs the Bring It Back program, which collects items such as pens, markers, batteries, printer cartridges, phones, and other e-waste so they can be recovered instead of sent to landfill. The company also says it has hundreds of return and recycle facilities across Australia. This supports a circular economy, which means keeping materials in use for as long as possible.

Reduced landfill waste

A 2022 article said Officeworks lifted its recycling rate from 70% to 90% across the business after waste audits and other internal changes. The same source said yearly landfill contributions fell from 2,500 tonnes to just under 500 tonnes. That suggests the company has made real progress in cutting waste from its own operations.

Planted trees with customers

Officeworks says it plants two trees for every one used, based on the weight of paper products bought by customers. Independent coverage also said that since working with Greening Australia in 2017, the company has helped plant 1.75 million trees through its People & Plant range, with a goal of 2 million trees by 2025. This is a nature-restoration action tied to customer purchases.

Created People & Planet range

Officeworks has a People & Planet range that helps customers find products it says are more sustainable. A 2022 article said the range includes items made from recycled, recyclable, refillable, compostable, or sustainably sourced materials. This makes it easier for shoppers to choose products with lower environmental impact, although each item still needs to be checked on its own merits.

Focused on responsible sourcing

Officeworks says it is committed to sourcing goods and services in responsible and ethical ways. It also says it is working to reduce supply chain emissions and ensure zero deforestation in the supply chain. These are important because a retailer’s biggest impacts often sit outside its own stores, in the products it buys and sells.

Recognised for sustainability work

Officeworks received the Large Business Transformation Award from the Banksia Foundation’s National Banksia Sustainability Awards. The award was linked to work on cutting carbon emissions and waste, supporting equal opportunities, and moving toward net zero and a more circular economy. Awards are not proof on their own, but they do show outside recognition of the company’s sustainability program.
