National Australia Bank Sustainability Commitments
2030
Reach $80bn environmental finance
NAB says it has an environmental finance ambition of $80 billion by 2030. This means it plans to channel that amount into projects and activities linked to environmental outcomes, such as cleaner energy and lower-emission assets. The bank says it had already made $17.7 billion of progress toward that goal since 2024.
2026
Cut thermal coal exposure
NAB says it aims to reduce thermal coal mining exposures by 50% by 2026. It also says it will not finance new thermal coal mining projects or new customers in that sector. This target is part of its wider climate-risk policy for lending.
2030
Phase down coal to near zero
NAB says it wants thermal coal mining exposure to fall to effectively zero by 2030, apart from residual performance guarantees linked to rehabilitation of existing assets. In plain terms, the bank is planning to almost fully exit direct thermal coal mining finance over time.
2050
Reduce oil and gas exposure
NAB says it will reduce oil and gas exposure from 2026 through to 2050, aligned with the International Energy Agency’s Net Zero Emissions by 2050 pathway. This is a long-term plan to lower lending exposure to fossil fuels over time.
2025
Source all electricity from renewables
NAB says it joined RE100 in 2019 and set a target to source 100% of its electricity consumption from renewable sources by 30 June 2025. RE100 is a corporate renewable electricity initiative, so this commitment is about the bank’s own power use rather than its lending.
2026
Prepare for climate disclosure rules
NAB says it is preparing for the Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards, including AASB S2 Climate-related Disclosures, from 2026. This means it is getting ready for a formal reporting rule that asks companies to explain climate risks, climate plans, and related financial impacts in a standard way.
