Made hammocks from recycled bottles

Three scuba divers decided they'd seen enough. Dean Leibbrandt, Jaryd, and Tegan Leibbrandt founded Nakie after seeing firsthand the devastation to our beautiful oceans. As nature lovers who enjoy camping, they decided to combine their passion for the outdoors with a mission to reduce ocean plastic pollution. They spent 9 months in their spare bedroom testing the world’s first 100% recycled hammock, made from 37 recycled bottles.

Saved plastic bottles

They’ve now saved over 5 million plastic water bottles from entering landfills and our waterways.

Started tree planting programme

Just four months after launching, they began “Planting out of poverty.” This program hires workers from poor areas in North-West Madagascar to plant trees in Nakie’s reserve.

Planted four trees per product

They plant 4 trees for each product they sell. As of 2025, they’ve planted over 2.5 million trees.

Became cruelty-free certified

The company has been Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free since 2021-04-23.
