Monki is a fashion brand within H&M Group and its sustainability content is now largely redirected to weekday.com. The available material shows Monki has focused on sustainability initiatives within the wider group, including circularity, recycling innovation, and reporting. In 2020, Monki launched products made with the Green Machine recycling technology, described as a process for separating cotton and polyester blends in a closed cycle. The brand has also been associated with upcycled denim and recycled swimwear, and its sustainability work has been discussed in the context of H&M Group reporting and ESG disclosure.

Monki Sustainability Actions

Launched Green Machine products

Monki announced the launch of a new recycling machine, the ‘Green Machine’, and said it is the first brand to use the new technology to recycle mixed fibres on a large scale. The first collection using the new recycling technology comprises a grey hoodie and joggers. Through a hydrothermal process, the recycling machine separates cotton and polyester blends from one another in a closed cycle.

Used less than 5% chemicals

The process uses heat, water and less than five percent biodegradable chemicals to recycle large quantities of clothing. The Green Machine is described as a closed cycle, meaning the water, heat and chemistry are recycled, so there is no discharge.

Released first recycled collection

The collection will be available online from the end of November. The collection is designed for smaller quantities, and Monki aims to use this type of production process on a larger scale by autumn 2021.

Overseen sustainability strategy

Monki head of sustainability Jenny Fagerlin said the company had, in the past two years, mobilised itself to try and build a sustainability strategy that really turns the table upside down in the organisation. She said she had overseen the company’s forays into upcycled denim and recycled swimwear.

Included in H&M Group reporting

H&M Group’s annual and sustainability report is its main disclosure under the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and is prepared in accordance with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). The report provides a consolidated view of financial and sustainability-related performance, including governance, climate action, materials-related work and system-level initiatives.
