Maria Mcmanus Sustainability Actions

Founded on responsible principles

Maria McManus is a luxury womenswear collection founded on responsible principles: use less water, utilize fewer chemicals and create less waste.

Uses recycled materials

We love recycled materials. Not only do they use significantly less water, electricity, chemicals, and carbon, but they also use waste, rather than creating it.

Certifies cotton with GOTS

We certify our cotton with GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard. This means that all cotton yarns certified by GOTS must contain a minimum of 95% organic cotton and cannot be treated with chlorine bleach, formaldehyde or other toxic chemicals and metals. Additionally, strict social standards must be adhered to, ensuring that working conditions are safe & hygienic, and that fair living wages are paid to employees.

Uses recycled cashmere

Our recycled cashmere is made in Italy. Our factory gathers used cashmere sweaters from all over the world giving them a second life. After the cashmere garments are collected, they are checked by hand to confirm the fibers are in fact cashmere and then divided into color lots. The cashmere lots are then broken down into smaller pieces, combed several times and re-spun to create new luxurious yarns.

Uses GRS-certified yarns

Our yarns are certified by the Global Recycled Standard ensuring that all steps of the production process are traceable, and are made to the highest standard, while protecting workers’ rights.

Uses RWS wool

We certify the majority of our Italian merino wool sweaters, trousers and blazers using the Responsible wool Standard. RWS certifies that our wool comes from animals that are well treated, from land that is well managed, mitigating damage to soil and improving biodiversity and that all people handling the wool are treated fairly and paid a fair living wage.

Uses FSC viscose

Our viscose is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council ensuring the wood pulp used to make our viscose comes from well managed, regenerated forests.

Uses biodegradable buttons

Corozo is a plant-based material, derived from the seed or nut of the tagua palm tree in Central America. They are often called “vegetable ivory” since they are extremely hard and durable and mimic the appearance of animal ivory with a beautiful texture and natural looking finish.

Works with craft collectives

In addition to considering how to make our material choices less harmful to the environment, we are also working to protect centuries old crafts, in an effort to ensure certain skills and techniques are not lost. Some of these crafts include handmade macrame and crochet from a collective of female artisans in Bolivia, hosting basket weaving events with Erin Pollard and integrating stunning 1800 year old laces from northern France that are certified by Dentelle de Callais Caudry.
