Marco Beverage Systems Sustainability Actions

B Corp certified

Marco Beverage Systems announced that its business is now B Corp Certified. As a B Corp certified company, Marco joins a global community of businesses that strive to balance profit with purpose. The certification measures a company’s entire social and environmental impact and requires high social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability to all stakeholders.

Tracked greenhouse gas emissions

Marco began regularly cataloguing its greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in a reduction of its emissions from 1906 tonnes (Oct 21 to Mar 22) to 880 tonnes (Oct 22 to Mar 23). The company also states that it began tracking and targeting greenhouse gas emissions reduction in 2021, resulting in a 54% decrease in the year that followed.

Used waterless testing

For over a decade, Marco has utilised a means of waterless testing in its production facilities to allow it to test many of its machines without water, or the energy required to heat that water. The company says a case study found that it is unique in its industry in this regard.

Embedded energy efficiency

Since 2010 Marco has embedded energy-efficiency as a standard feature in its product design. It also uses recyclable and longer lasting materials and components to ensure a longer product life-cycle.

Partnered with The Nature Trust

Marco is partnering with The Nature Trust, an Irish organisation dedicated to reforestation in Ireland, to purchase land to reforest in order to help promote ecological balance, offset greenhouse gas emissions, and provide forestry that can be used by people as a local amenity. The company also says the partnership supports reforestation and biodiversity projects across Ireland, creating lasting environmental benefits through new native woodlands and restored habitats.

Supported community initiatives

Marco has sponsored a TUD engineering student who was in danger of having to stop her education and leave Ireland and says she will be getting work experience also. It has also created a charitable committee to continue and improve its positive impact on the community, and has sponsored community events through the Specialty Coffee Association, its own “Best Brewer” event, and the “Glitter Cat” contest.

Introduced inclusion policies

Marco began analysing diversity and inclusion within the business and took steps to ensure that underrepresented areas get considered. These included hiring for gender balance, cultural awareness initiatives, D&I training, and promoting engineering as a viable career for women. The company also introduced mental health initiatives, LGBTQI+ parental, adoptive and fertility leave policies, and carers and adoptive leave.
