Mamas & Papas says ESG is part of why it exists, with a focus on future generations and a sustainable world for children. Its approach is organised around four pillars: customers, community, people, and environment/product. The company says it is committed to being a socially and environmentally responsible business, with work on ethical sourcing, supply chain transparency, circularity, waste reduction, and lower emissions. It has also developed policies and internal teams to support product ESG and sustainability, and it works with external organisations on labour practices, woodland conservation, and take-back schemes.

Mamas & Papas Sustainability Actions

Launched Oxfam take-back scheme

The company has partnered with charity Oxfam to launch a take-back scheme to reduce the amount of clothing sent to landfill each year. Mamas & Papas said the move would extend the life of its baby clothes by enabling customers to re-love, repurpose or recycle. Take-back boxes will be installed in all standalone Mamas & Papas stores.

Joined ETI membership

Mamas & Papas became members of the Ethical Trading Initiative’s (ETI) code of labour practice, which aims to improve and safeguard the human rights of overseas workers across its global supply chain. The code addresses issues such as wages, hours of work, health and safety and the right to join free trade unions.

Created Product ESG team

Throughout its foundation membership, Mamas & Papas says it has taken several actions to enhance its human rights due diligence processes. Firstly, it now has a dedicated team for Product ESG and Sustainability, with two colleagues focussing solely on Product ESG and Sustainability and working on carbon, materials, salient human rights risks and transparency of the supply chain.

Issued sourcing policy and code

The company developed a Supplier Code of Conduct containing its 11 Sourcing Principles, developed in accordance with the ETI Base Code. It also enhanced its Ethical Trading Policy, which details key aspects of its responsible sourcing strategy including its supplier audit programme and Sourcing Principles. The documents were launched together and tier one suppliers were encouraged to share them onwards with their supply chain.

Expanded resale and repair services

Mamas & Papas launched ‘Loved for Life’, a new initiative offering services that ensure essential baby products can be reused, refreshed or recycled, extending the life of items such as pushchairs and baby clothes. The service includes refurbished pre-loved pushchairs, a Trade-In service, and the existing ‘Valet & Service’ offer in 36 stores across the UK.
