B Corp certification earned

Maker’s Mark became a Certified B Corporation in January 2022. B Corp is a certification for companies that meet set standards on social impact, workers, community, environment, and governance. The brand says this made it the largest distillery in the world to earn the label. Regenified farm certification

Star Hill Farm became the world’s first distillery to reach Regenified Tier 3 certification. Regenified is a certification linked to regenerative agriculture, which means farming in ways that aim to improve soil and ecosystems over time. Maker’s Mark says most of its corn and wheat now comes from growers using regenerative methods, and that 86% of its grains come from ten selected growers.

White oak research project

Maker’s Mark worked with the University of Kentucky and Independent Stave Company to build the White Oak Tree Improvement Repository. The project maps white oak genetics and grows seedlings to help protect the trees used for bourbon barrels. The brand says this is meant to support the long-term future of the whiskey industry and improve understanding of white oak health and regeneration.

Zero-landfill waste work

The distillery says it is working toward zero landfill waste through recycling, composting, and reuse. It pulverizes used glass into sand for trails and roads, upcycles cardboard for packaging, composts food and yard waste, and sends some leftover waste to energy recovery. In 2024, it says it recycled 111 tons of material and turned about 20 tons of glass waste each month into new uses.

Solar and energy savings

Maker’s Mark says its warehouses in Loretto are powered by solar energy. It also says its LEED-certified cellar uses a vegetative roof and native plants to help cool the building and reduce energy use. The brand reports energy-saving steps such as heat recovery, lower natural gas use, and removing old refrigerants, and says these changes cut energy use per bourbon batch.

The brand says it protects the watershed around its main lake and maintains a water sanctuary, nature preserve, and pollinator garden at Star Hill Farm. It also says bees help biodiversity on site.
