Maggie Marilyn Ltd presents itself as a fashion brand built around transparency, traceability and a circular approach to clothing. Its sustainability material describes a direct-to-consumer model introduced after exiting wholesale in 2020, with a stated focus on reducing carbon emissions, supporting regenerative and organic fibres, and improving supply-chain accountability. The brand says its suppliers and manufacturers must sign a Supplier Code of Conduct covering animal welfare, environmental management, chemical and water use, greenhouse gas emissions, living wage, working conditions and waste management. It also references repair, repurposing and recycling, and says it aims to leave farms, makers and materials better off than when found.

Maggie Marilyn Ltd Sustainability Actions

Exited wholesale in 2020

The flow-on effect from that decision in 2020 continues to steer us in the right direction; the flexibility and time afforded to us by not needing to meet wholesale deadlines allowed us to increase our dependence on sea shipping – resulting in a decrease in our carbon emissions by 73% and making us New Zealand’s first carbon positive clothing brand.

Created 2020 strategy

We created our 2020 Sustainability Strategy in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, as a roadmap to keep us on track for achieving our sustainability goals.

Opened up the supply chain

We are very open with sharing all our makers and suppliers on our website. We strongly believe that in order to create positive change in the fashion industry we need to be sharing our process and supporting other designers in adopting ethical and sustainable supply chains.

Uses certified materials

Our fabrics and fibre and fabric certifications include GOTS, OEKO-TEX®, Bluesign, Responsible Wool Standard and ZQ. The brand says it only uses European Flax® certified linen, organic cotton, post-consumer waste recycled polyester, ECONYL® regenerated nylon, and wool from ethically farmed, non-mulesed sheep.

Uses deadstock fabric

While we use some deadstock in our collections, we recognise that there are many imperfections with this system. Although an imperfect system, our decision to use small amounts of deadstock stems from our desire to repurpose this excess fabric, helping to divert it from ending up in landfill.
