LivingOn program launched

Living Edge says it started its LivingOn sustainability program in 2008. The program was created after the company decided that meeting product standards was not enough on its own. It says the program now covers environmental, social, and economic issues, which is often called the triple bottom line. In simple terms, that means the business says it tries to balance people, planet, and profit in how it grows and operates.

B Corp certification achieved

Living Edge says it became a Certified B Corporation in May 2023. B Corp certification is given by B Lab, a group that checks how a company affects workers, customers, communities, and the environment. Living Edge describes the certification as a sign that its long-term sustainability work has been independently recognised. It also says the certification marked a new stage in its effort to run a more socially responsible business.

Carbon neutral operations

Living Edge says it has kept its operations carbon neutral since 2017. That means it measures emissions from its own operations and from parts of its wider value chain, then offsets them by buying Verified Carbon Standard credits, which are credits used to balance emissions through approved climate projects. It also says its annual emissions inventory is checked by Pangolin Associates, a carbon and energy consultancy. The company says it switched showroom electricity in Sydney and Melbourne to carbon neutral energy in 2020.

Circular furniture services

Living Edge says it has built services to keep furniture in use for longer. Its Relive program supports repair, refurbishment, reuse, and resale of pre-owned products. Its Lifecycle model is a leasing service, sometimes called furniture-as-a-service, where the company keeps ownership and responsibility for the assets. The company says these models are meant to reduce waste and support a circular economy, which means designing products and services so materials stay in use instead of being thrown away.

Waste and packaging changes

Living Edge says its Living Without Waste program promotes recycling across its operations. It reports that in FY22 it recycled 69% of the waste generated in its operations. It also says it is a signatory to the Australian Packaging Covenant, a voluntary industry agreement focused on reducing packaging waste. The company says it introduced 100% recyclable paper-based carrier bags and shipping cartons, which suggests a move away from harder-to-recycle packaging materials.

WELL Platinum fit-out

Living Edge says its Perth showroom became the first WELL Platinum certified fit-out in Western Australia in April 2021. WELL Platinum is a building standard that looks at how indoor spaces affect health and wellbeing, including air quality, light, comfort, and movement. The company also says its showrooms include end-of-trip facilities, which are amenities like showers and bike storage that can make active commuting easier.
