Liberty Sustainability Actions

Backed industry initiatives

To support wider action to make the apparel sector more sustainable, Liberty is backing industry-wide sustainability initiatives from farm to finished product. These include the Better Cotton Initiative, Global Organic Textile Standard, Global Recycled Standard and FSC® certification.

Introduced Responsible Collection

Liberty is leading the way with a Responsible Collection that reimagines some of its signature fabrics. Choices include an organic version of its world-famous Tana Lawn cotton, grown without using synthetic chemicals and woven in line with strict environmental guidelines.

Uses lower-impact materials

Other new fabrics are made with wood pulp and hemp, all raw materials that regenerate naturally. Liberty sources these materials from forests that have a recognised certification to demonstrate they are well managed. It also trials innovative materials that recycle plastic waste like old fishing nets, including Econyl, a recycled nylon made from post-consumer waste.

Reduced water and ink use

Liberty uses digital textile printing to produce designs on linen, chambray and Tana Lawn® cotton. This digital textile printing uses less water and just 10% of the volume of ink that would be needed for traditional screen printing. The printing machines recover water used for washing fabrics and re-use it for the first wash of the colour pumps.

Improved mill efficiency

Liberty is improving mill processes to reduce the amount of water and energy used. A heat exchanger has been installed to pre-warm water used in the washing process, and LED lights and other efficient equipment reduce the amount of energy needed to run the mill. Two-thirds of the chemicals used in its printing processes are approved by the Global Organic Textile Standard.

Changed packaging materials

Liberty is taking action to make its packaging more eco-friendly by making it reusable, recyclable or biodegradable wherever it can. Around 400,000 cardboard boxes every year are recyclable and biodegradable. The green air pouches and green film used for wrapping and protection are made of 95% recycled content and can be recycled again after use.

Renewed ISO 14001 certification

All major steelmaking sites have achieved or renewed ISO 14001: 2015 Environmental Management System Certification in the past two years. The group also continues to strive to minimise waste generation and promote recovery, recycling and reuse in its operations, and conducts regular flora and fauna assessments around its operations.
