Introduced SRI screening criteria

On January 1, 2015, Kindred introduced screening criteria for all business loans, mortgage applications, and credit reviews. This process uses social and environmental criteria to identify if an investment can be deemed socially responsible. The screening process excludes companies engaged in harmful practices like gambling or military weapons and prioritizes those supporting human rights, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare.

Validated all GICs as SRI

In 2016, Kindred became the first financial institution in Canada to have all their GICs validated as SRI. The designation reflects a rigorous negative screening process to exclude industries such as pornography, weapons, nuclear power, marijuana, and tobacco. Some products, like Canada’s first Affordable Housing GIC and Community Inspiration GICs, were described as meeting the higher standard of impact investing.

Contributed to affordable housing

Kindred contributed $125,000 to Parkwood Seniors Community’s Independent Living Affordable Housing Project, Building A Community For All. The project was described as including 28 affordable one-bedroom apartments for people on a modest income, with many units fully accessible.

Supported Waterloo Region Home Share

Kindred highlighted Community Justice Initiatives of Waterloo Region Home Share, a free, supportive process that matches home providers and home seekers in the Waterloo region and outlying areas. The program facilitates a Living Arrangement Memorandum of Understanding and provides ongoing support for people seeking safe and secure housing.

Partnered on SRI products

In 2001, Kindred partnered with Mennonite Mutual Aid and Mennonite Foundation of Canada to launch Meritas Financial Inc., offering socially responsible investments aligned with commitments to peace and social justice. Since 2017, Kindred has partnered with Aviso Wealth to continue providing access to SRI options through NEI Investments mutual funds.
