Published Sustainability Report 2025

Kao released the Kao Sustainability Report 2025 on its company website, providing a progress report on its ESG strategy, the Kirei Lifestyle Plan. The report includes the company’s ESG vision and strategy, metrics and targets, governance, risk and opportunity management, and progress across its key themes.

Expanded skin protection business

In 2024, Kao significantly grew its skin protection business, with a 29% increase in sales year-on-year. The product range includes UV care products to protect the skin from UV rays, self-tanning products to produce a tanned look without UV exposure, and environmental skin protection such as mosquito repellents.

Raised sales of lower-impact products

Sales of products meeting Kao’s strict environmental conformity requirements increased by 24% year-on-year. The increase was attributed to conforming products in the Attack laundry detergent and CuCute dishwashing detergent brands, which contributed to sales in the Fabric and Home Care Business.

Improved palm oil traceability

Kao reported 88% traceability to oil palm farms. The company says traceability is essential to minimize environmental and human rights risks in the supply chain and to ensure a stable supply of raw materials.

Reduced lifecycle CO2 emissions

Kao reported a 15% reduction in lifecycle CO2 emissions from a 2017 base year. The company said it is introducing low-carbon facilities, expanding the use of renewable energy and reducing CO2 emissions throughout the entire product lifecycle.

Received CDP Triple-A rating

Kao was selected as an A-List company in all three CDP surveys of Climate Change, Forests and Water Security. It was one of eight companies worldwide to achieve the Triple-A rating in 2024 and the only company in Japan to be selected for five consecutive years.

Recognized for ethical business

Kao was selected by Ethisphere as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies 2025, and the company said it has received the recognition for 19 consecutive years since 2007.

Added tactile marks on shampoos

Kao highlighted easy-to-use tactile marks on shampoos as an in-action initiative. The company lists this under its sustainability activities as part of making products easier to use for all.
