Jones Snowboards presents sustainability as central to its brand ethos and product design. The company says it has focused on reducing the environmental impact of its snowboards since its foundation, using an Eco-Performance design philosophy that balances performance, durability and sustainability. Its sustainability work includes switching production to 100% solar power in 2020, completing a life cycle assessment of its boards, using recycled and bio-based materials, and eliminating solvent varnish from production. Jones also supports climate and reforestation organisations through partnerships and has introduced Fair Trade Certified snowboards and splitboards.

Switched factory to solar power

Our factory’s move to 100% solar power in May 2020 played a huge role in these sustainability improvements.

Completed a life cycle assessment

Around this same time, we also began an in-depth analysis of the complete life cycle of a Jones board, including every stage of its production and distribution. The goal of this analysis, known as a product Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), was to calculate the approximate carbon footprint of every snowboard and splitboard model we sell.

Adopted recycled materials

This process of testing and adopting sustainable materials whenever possible began with our decision to use only recycled steel edges and recycled ABS sidewalls in our first board line.

Switched to bio-based epoxy

Switching from standard epoxy resin to bio-based epoxy resin in 2019 was a solid first step.

Removed solvent varnish

Our commitment to using only sustainable topsheet materials like eco-plastic, flax fiber and wood veneer completely eliminated our need to use solvent varnish, a toxic petro-chemical traditionally used as a glossy clear coat.

By 2030 I hope the entire snowboard industry is using bio-resin made with 100% bio content.

Recycle end-of-life boards

I also hope we have a clean solution for the end-of-life of a snowboard. There have been some recent advancements in being able to break down a dead snowboard and recycle the materials, but this technology is still at an early stage. In the future we want to be able to take back dead boards from consumers and completely recycle them.
