J JS Lee is associated with Lee, the denim and casual apparel brand, which launched its first global sustainability platform, For A World That Works™, in 2020. The platform focuses on more sustainable solutions in product development and production, with stated priorities covering people, the planet, and product innovation. Reported actions include reducing water, energy and chemical use in denim dyeing, expanding sustainably produced product offerings, and integrating circular design principles through the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign. The brand also set global sustainability goals covering renewable energy, sustainable synthetics, sustainably grown or recycled cotton, and growth in Indigood™ dyed products.

J JS Lee Sustainability Actions

Launched sustainability platform

On February 3, 2020, Lee introduced the brand’s first global sustainability platform, For A World That Works™. The platform unites the brand’s legacy of innovation and purpose with a responsibility to build a stronger, more sustainable world. It is guided by three key focus areas: All People, Our Planet and Everything We Do.

Introduced Indigoodâ„¢ Denim

Coinciding with the new sustainability platform, the brand launched Indigoodâ„¢ Denim, a signature denim collection that eliminates water from the denim dyeing process. The foam dye applicator reduces the amount of water required by 100 percent, the energy required by 60 percent and the chemicals required by 89 percent.

Launched Back to Nature jeans

An additional sustainably produced product offering available in select markets included Back to Nature, a jean that is compostable. Lee’s range of biodegradable denim products, Back to Nature jeans, are made from 100 percent cotton. When the jeans and jackets reach the end of their useful life, the metal buttons can be unscrewed and reused, and the remaining component products can be composted at home.

Joined Jeans Redesign

In 2019, Lee partnered with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign. The guidelines reduce waste associated with denim production, establish requirements for jean durability and recyclability, and are based on the principles of a circular economy. The guidelines are being integrated into an internal assessment tool used to measure the sustainability performance of Lee products.
