House Of Tweed Sustainability Actions

Made from British wool

Harris Tweed is made from 100% British wool, naturally renewable, biodegradable and recyclable. Wool is breathable, wind and waterproof and flame resistant, all without the need for additional finishes.

Durable fabric for life

Harris Tweed is a high performance fabric: durable, requiring minimal laundering, and long lasting. And being made from wool, is fully biodegradable.

Supports rural employment

Produced only in the Outer Hebrides, Harris Tweed sustains specialist weaving and textile production skills throughout remote rural communities – generating sustainable employment opportunities through generations of islanders.

Reduced carbon footprint

In 2024, the business took the first formal steps on its carbon management journey, working with Beyondly to measure the carbon footprint of the business and give a benchmark for future action.

Joined stewardship scheme

In 2023, the business joined the Countryside Stewardship Mid-Tier Scheme, put in place by DEFRA to improve local environments. The scheme is aimed at improving this environment for wildlife, insects, and pollinators, whilst also bettering water and air quality.

Improved farm practices

To date, work has been undertaken in open fields to improve soil structures and drainage; winter cover crops have been planted that provide shelter and food for a variety of birds and insects; grass margins have been created to support spring pollination and help protect the watercourse; along with concrete and drainage work to reduce contamination of the local waterways.

Reduced food miles

Most of the raw grain processed comes from within a 40-mile radius of the factory. In 2018, the business started growing its own products alongside trial crops for customers at The Mead, and all grain grown on the farm travels less than 10 miles to reach the production plant, reducing food miles and offering customers 100% traceability.

Purchased renewable electricity

After taking action on the findings from the first carbon footprint report over the last 12 months, the business included switching to the purchase of renewable electricity.
