Frankie & Jo’s Sustainability Actions

Certified B Corporation

Frankie & Jo’s became a B-Corp in 2021. The company says being certified as a b-corporation is a way to hold itself accountable in its goals for sustainability, climate change, organic practices, supply chain practices, and tending to its team and community.

Compostable shipping program

In 2021, Frankie & Jo’s introduced a new shipping program after months of research and testing. The company said it got rid of styrofoam and plastic tape and now uses a curbside recyclable and compostable cooler made from 100% post-consumer plant starch. Its shipping box is made with 56% post-consumer recycled material, printed with water-based, non-toxic inks, and the shipping labels are compostable.

Waste reduction in flavors

In April 2019, Frankie & Jo’s said it was shining the spotlight on sustainability through waste reduction and intentional purchasing. It teamed up with Imperfect Produce to make Spring Thyme, using imperfect lemons and thyme leaves. Golden State included house-made orange marmalade made from 250 pounds of up-cycled blood orange rinds from a previous flavor.

Employee commuter benefits

Frankie & Jo’s said it was making material changes to increase the financial stability of its team through policies such as reimbursing employee bus passes and bicycle parts with its sustainable commuter benefits program, and providing a $20 per month allowance to spend on anything related to self-care.

Inclusive workplace practices

The company said it regularly promotes and partners with other women and BIPOC-led businesses, organizations, and artists across Seattle and the Puget Sound region. It also said those in leadership roles go through DEI training and are actively propelling a more inclusive and equity-focused workplace through both company culture and policies.

Plant-based product mission

Frankie & Jo’s said its vision is to reduce dependence on animals for food, traditions, and daily lives. It wants to use ice cream as a force for good and to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to explore how to eat more plants.
