Fonterra Sustainability Actions

Published sustainability reporting data

Fonterra has made sustainability reporting data public, including a FY24 data pack that sits alongside its annual report. The company says this pack includes reporting under the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI, a common set of sustainability reporting rules) and supports its climate-related disclosures under New Zealand climate standards. This shows it is sharing more detailed information about its environmental and social performance, rather than only giving broad claims.

Set a climate roadmap

Fonterra published a Climate Roadmap in 2023 and says it uses this plan to guide its work toward net zero by 2050. The roadmap includes a Scope 3 target, which means it is also looking at indirect emissions from its supply chain and farm suppliers, not just emissions from its own sites. It says the plan was built with sustainability, farming, and science experts and is meant to support continuous improvement.

Supports farm-level change

Fonterra says all of its farmers must have a Farm Environment Plan and an Animal Wellbeing Plan. It also gives farmers an annual Farm Insights Report with data on greenhouse gas emissions, milk quality, animal wellbeing, and production. The company says it offers advisors, digital tools, and efficiency services to help farmers spot risks and make practical changes on farm. This is a direct way of linking sustainability goals to day-to-day farming work.

Created emissions incentives

In 2025, Fonterra announced new incentives for farmers who meet emissions-related criteria. The plan includes extra payments for farms that achieve certain emissions goals, plus customer-funded support linked to Mars and Nestlé agreements. The company says these payments are meant to reward lower-emissions farming and help farmers buy tools and services that improve emissions efficiency. This ties financial rewards to climate performance on farm.

Supports rural communities

Fonterra says it supports rural communities through partnerships and volunteer activity. The company highlights work with Rural Support Trust, Feed Out, Surfing for Farmers, and Trees for Survival. These efforts include funding, in-kind support, food donations, mental health support, and native planting in schools. The focus is broader than farming alone and includes community wellbeing and environmental restoration.
