Foilco Limited presents its foils as having environmental benefits in printing and finishing, with a focus on recyclability, repulpability and compostability. The company says stamping foil is a dry, solvent-free process that uses the minimum amount of energy, and that foil applied to paper or board can be recycled or composted. Foilco also operates a foil recovery scheme, ZeroFoil2Landfill, and says it was the first foil company to be certified as ZeroFoil2Landfill compliant. Its environmental development roadmap includes decarbonising office and manufacturing operations and working towards a Net Zero company.

Foilco Limited Sustainability Actions

ZeroFoil2Landfill scheme

Foilco were the very first foil company to set up a foil recovery scheme and to be certified as ZeroFoil2Landfill compliant. A scheme backed by the British Printing Industry Federation (BPIF). Using a specialist waste management company, we work alongside printers and print finishes to recover foil waste. Since Aug 2017, we have recovered over 922 tonnes of foil that otherwise would have gone to landfill.

Foil repulpability testing

Repulpability Testing – SGS (SGS-IPS 01683-19) proved that 80% foil coverage of a product does not affect the repulpability of a recyclable material. The test showed that, once transferred, foil is so thin that it dissipates within the re-pulping process.

Composting study results

Composting study – INTERTEK (EN13432 & ASTM D6400) tested pigment, metallic and special foils from the Fanfold Collection printed onto certified compostable 300g board. The results showed that the degree of disintegration after 12 weeks was 99.4%. After 135 days, 95.32% of the organic carbon in the foil samples had converted to carbon dioxide.

Waste foil repurposed as SRF

Waste foil is repurposed as SRF, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The thin polyester carrier layer has a high calorific value which means the waste film can be converted to Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) for use by other industries.

Safety testing with labs

Foilco partner with leading global test laboratories to provide any reassurances required in the specification of their foils. These include Ingestion EN 71-3 and Food contact EU 10/2011. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and further information is available on request.
