Daniel Silverstain is a New York City-based fashion brand associated with Zero Waste Daniel, a label built around reducing waste in garment production. The brand’s sustainability-related content focuses on using rescued, recycled, deadstock, and up-cycled fabrics, and on zero-waste design methods in which every scrap of fabric has a purpose. It also presents fashion as a way to extend the life of clothing, reuse materials, and reduce landfill waste. The brand’s collections are described through retro-futurist and culturally inspired themes, while its sustainability messaging centres on circularity and limiting fashion’s environmental footprint.

Daniel Silverstain Sustainability Actions

Zero-waste design approach

Sustainability is at the forefront of each piece with the motivation of having zero waste. Daniel has set his mind on limiting this result in fashion. Traditional design methods are linear and often wasteful, so I had to reimagine the whole process. Zero-waste design is like putting together a puzzle—every scrap of fabric has a purpose.

Used rescued and recycled fabrics

Zero Waste Daniel has come to be synonymous with the next generation of fashion designers seeking to shrink the environmental impact of the industry. Known for his streetwear made from rescued and recycled fabrics, the brand developed a clothing line celebrating DSNY made from deadstock Sanitation materials and other up-cycled fabrics.

Reduced fabric waste

I started digging into the environmental impacts of fashion, and one of the most shocking facts I discovered was that about 20-30% of fabric is wasted during the production of garments. This waste typically goes straight to the landfill, which is just unacceptable to me. The scale of the problem really motivated me to act and find ways to reduce and reuse every possible scrap.

Promoted longer wear

A small act that can have a big impact is simply wearing what you already own for longer. The fashion industry moves at a fast pace, but slowing down and making thoughtful decisions about your wardrobe can change everything. You can also look for ways to upcycle or repurpose items instead of throwing them away—give them a new life.

Supported Sanitation Foundation

We first partnered with Zero Waste Daniel as part of his New York Fashion Week 2019 collection, ZWDSNY. Together we developed a clothing line celebrating DSNY made from deadstock Sanitation materials and other up-cycled fabrics. Daniel even took it a step further, flexing his comedy muscles during his NYFW exhibition with a stand-up show benefitting the Sanitation Foundation.

Daniel Silverstain Sustainability Commitments

2030

Create a circular fashion system

My end goal is for my brand to be a household name. Slowly building a brand with integrity and the goal of longevity so that Zero Waste Daniel becomes synonymous with sustainability in fashion, forming a trust with consumers that we will do what we say. I want to create a circular fashion system—where nothing is wasted, everything has a purpose, and we value the resources we use.
