Launched Kick Plastic

Costa Del Mar says it launched Kick Plastic in 2015 to reduce the amount of plastic used across the brand and to encourage consumers and partners to cut back on single-use plastics. Expanded Untangled collection

Costa Del Mar reports that its Untangled collection repurposes discarded fishing nets into eyewear and apparel. The brand states that the frames are made from 97% recycled fishing nets and that the collection expanded in 2023 with additional colour and lens options. It also says the programme has diverted 3.6 tons of nets from the ocean since 2018, and that the collection is developed in partnership with Bureo.

Introduced bio-based frames

In 2016, Costa Del Mar introduced a bio-based frame material derived in part from castor oil. The company says the material has a smaller carbon footprint than petroleum-based nylon and that it has converted all nylon frames to a bio-based resin. In its later reporting, the brand also says it introduced a bio-acetate frame material in 2023 with at least 67% bio-based carbon content.

Reduced packaging waste

Costa Del Mar says it has worked to reduce packaging impacts by expanding the use of VELA bags across most apparel packaging. The company reports that this change avoided 2.25 million traditional polybags in 2023 and 2024. It also says its headwear uses visor boards made from 70% or more recycled materials and that it continues to explore recycled-content fabrics such as Repreve in apparel.

Runs conservation programmes

The brand operates several conservation-focused programmes, including OneCoast, Compete + Conserve, and Costa 5 Rivers. Costa says OneCoast supports communities affected by natural disasters, Compete + Conserve links tournament payouts to conservation donations, and Costa 5 Rivers engages college fishing clubs in conservation. The company also reports donations through the Worldwide Anglers Relief Fund and support for freshwater fisheries.
