Bulgari Sustainability Actions

Switched production to renewables

Bulgari has said that all of its production sites use renewable electricity. A 2022 interview with a company sustainability leader said this started in 2012 and applies to sites in Valenza, Florence, and Switzerland. The same source said the brand also monitors electricity use closely and has fitted renovated boutiques with LED bulbs. This points to action on energy use and carbon emissions in its own operations.

Cut plastic in packaging

Bulgari introduced plastic-free packaging for its basic jewellery and watch lines. The company said this cut plastic use by 96% compared with the previous version and could save more than 160 tonnes of plastic each year. It also replaced warranty and authenticity cards with versions made from recyclable paper, which it said would save another seven tonnes of plastic a year. These changes focus on reducing waste in product packaging.

Set up traceability systems

Bulgari said it has been building systems to trace materials through its supply chain, which means tracking where raw materials come from and how they move through production. It said mined gold for watches and jewellery has been 100% ethically sourced since 2022, and recycled gold is fully traced with partners such as Metalor. The brand also said it is working on a similar system for coloured stones, where no global standard yet exists.

Joined circular economy work

Bulgari supported the creation of the Italian Alliance for the Circular Economy in 2017. Circular economy means keeping materials in use for longer through reuse, repair, recycling, and better design. The brand also said it is using Life Cycle Assessment, a method that measures a product’s environmental impact from start to finish, first for perfumes and accessories. This shows work on waste reduction and product design.

Reduced single-use plastics

In 2019, Bulgari said it began phasing out single-use plastics from offices, boutiques, and production sites. It linked this to LVMH’s wider goal of zero virgin plastic by 2026. The brand also said it shares best practices with employees to raise awareness of environmental issues. This is an operational change rather than a product change, and it is aimed at cutting plastic waste across the business.

Created sustainability reporting tools

Bulgari worked with JDJ Creative on a sustainability sub-brand and internal report for its fragrance division, and the project was repeated for a 2024 report after a 2023 version. The material was meant to help communicate sustainability actions across the business. While this is not proof of performance on its own, it shows the company has internal reporting structures for sustainability work.
