Bi-Rite Market Sustainability Actions

Diverted waste from landfill

In 2017, we diverted more than 800,000 pounds of waste from the landfill by recycling and composting.

Switched to LEDs

And when it comes to energy, we estimate we’ll save an estimated 63,495 kilowatts per year by our recent switch to LEDs.

Reuses or recycles 85%

Today Bi-Rite reuses or recycles 85% of its products and materials.

Uses imperfect produce

Delicious, but not beautiful, fruit and produce that guests don’t want to buy can always be used in other ways. In fact, Bi-Rite Creamery created two ice cream flavors for just that purpose. Our famous Balsamic Strawberry and Roasted Banana ice creams use the fruit that would otherwise end up composted.

Turns surplus food into meals

The chefs in our Markets’ kitchens turn our imperfect produce into delicious, creative dinners every night. They can use remaining pieces from the butcher for staff meal. Broken cookies can be turned into sundae toppings.

Encourages BYOB

And by BYOB we mean Bring Your Own Bag! Each year, we go through more than 325,000 paper bags at checkout. That’s 43,000 pounds of paper... It might seem like a small action to simply skip taking a paper bag, but every decision that actively minimizes waste is important.

Certified B Corporation

With an intense belief in using our business as a force for good in the world, Bi-Rite became a Certified B Corporation in the fall of 2015. This certification process includes a 300+ question assessment and a rigorous verification process, all so we can be publicly and transparently accountable to consider the impact of our decisions on our staff, guests, suppliers, community, and the environment.
