INDONESIA COCOA TECH CENTER OPENING

Investing in global center for sustainable cocoa farming solutions. We are proud to announce the formal opening of our state-of-the-art cocoa crop science technical center in Pasuruan, Indonesia. The center is the new home for our global cocoa crop science team and the fourth technical center in the AMEA region. It enables Mondelēz International to develop and promote better cocoa farming practices, and continue ongoing work with farming communities, suppliers and partners around the world. The center's unveiling represents an important step in our mission to lead the future of snacking by securing a sustainable future for high-quality cocoa, so consumers can enjoy the right snack, for the right moment, made the right way. As one of the world’s largest buyers of cocoa for chocolate, the sustainability of the cocoa farming industry is key to Mondelēz International’s long-term growth in Asia and around the world. “Cocoa is at the heart of chocolate, and demand is growing, with Asia set to become the second-largest consumer of cocoa ingredients. Mondelēz International is determined to meet that demand in the right way by creating a thriving cocoa sector,” said Maurizio Brusadelli, Executive Vice President and President, Asia, Middle East and Africa for Mondelēz International. “Consumers also expect more from their favorite brands like Cadbury Dairy Milk and Milka chocolate. People want delicious snacks they feel good about eating, know where ingredients come from and produced in ways that are better for the environment and communities. We need to secure a sustainable future for high-quality cocoa and other raw materials we use to create the snacks our consumers love. “We’re on a mission to drive positive change by creating a future of sustainable snacking and that includes using our global scale to create meaningful, lasting impact,” said Rob Hargrove, Executive Vice President, Research, Development and Quality for Mondelēz International. “The Pasuruan Cocoa Technical Center is our global home for cocoa crop science initiatives. It brings local and international cocoa crop science experts together with farmers and suppliers in the cocoa growing areas of Sulawesi, Sumatra, and East Java. Our scientists can go from the labs at the center to field sites where we have research collaborations and on-farm activities through Cocoa Life.” The center's focus on cocoa crop science and technical solutions that support high-yielding, sustainable and resilient farming practices is a clear commitment to the company's 2025 goal of sourcing 100 per cent of cocoa for chocolate through Cocoa Life. The company is on track to meet that target with 63 per cent of cocoa for its chocolate brands currently sourced through Cocoa Life.

ADVANCING A FOREST POSITIVE FUTURE

Proud member of new Forest Positive Coalition of Action. As part of Climate Week 2020, The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) launched the Forest Positive Coalition of Action, where seventeen global consumer goods brands, retailers and manufacturers will work together to accelerate systemic efforts to remove deforestation, forest degradation and conversion from the key commodity supply chains. As a participant, Mondelēz International commits to engagement with both producer governments and developed nation governments on commodity areas: soy, palm oil and paper, pulp and fiber-based packaging with the ambition to utilize collective reach and knowledge, global networks and resources, to engage and collaborate with producers, suppliers and traders, as well as governments and civil society, to advocate for forest positive solutions. As part of the Forest Positive Coalition of Action, we commit to working constructively with governments – both in producer nations and developed nations – to put in place practical measures to support a forest positive future. The Coalition will advocate and support practices to change behaviors and processes at a macro-level to support global forests and not one specific area. Our commitments include: Engaging with suppliers and traders to ask they implement Forest Positive actions across their entire commodity operations; Joining forces to address forest conservation challenges in key production landscapes; Engaging governments and stakeholders to create an enabling environment for forest conservation; Ensuring transparency and accountability by regularly reporting on progress.

JOINING NEW PLASTICS ECONOMY INITIATIVE AND UK PLASTICS PACT

Committing to tackling plastic waste to reduce our impact on people and the planet. Mondelēz International have joined two leading initiatives focused on tackling plastic waste and pollution, as we accelerate our efforts to reduce our impact on people and the planet. We are now a signatory of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, as well as a participant in the New Plastics Economy Initiative, and a member of the UK Plastics Pact. The initiatives share a collective ambition to address plastic waste and pollution at its source, by moving toward a circular economy where plastic stays in the economy and out of the environment. The announcement marks an important step forward in Mondelēz International’s ambition to create positive impact for people and planet and achieve zero-net waste packaging. Joining these initiatives furthers Mondelēz International’s 2025 sustainability goals which are focused on making snacks with less energy, water and waste. These goals are designed to address climate change in a meaningful way and are based on an end-to-end, science-based approach to reducing the company’s carbon footprint, including reducing absolute CO2 emissions from manufacturing and addressing deforestation in key raw material supply chains.

SETTING OUR NEW EMISSIONS GOAL

Using science-based targets to reduce emissions. We’re proud to announce our renewed commitment to reduce environmental impact and drive sustainable growth at scale, by joining the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and setting greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets consistent with requirements to keep global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius. “We take climate change very seriously because of the negative impact it has on people and planet, including within our own value chain. Our sustainable snacking strategy puts us at the forefront of sustainable ingredient sourcing and continues our contribution to addressing climate change by reducing emissions,” said Van de Put. “Setting science-based targets is an important step forward in further reducing our environmental impact, an imperative for sustainable growth as we live our purpose to empower people to snack right.”

TAKING A STAND AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

Renewing our commitment to the Paris Agreement Climate change is a real risk to the global economy and the planet at large. Four years ago, major companies, unions, governments and civil society groups rallied behind an ambitious, global climate accord, known as the Paris Agreement. Earlier this month, 75 CEOs, companies and union leaders came together to show their collective support for the accord. At a pivotal moment for action on the climate crisis, we want to stand up for both the economic health and competitiveness of the United States and its companies and the wellbeing of its communities and working families. The renewed commitment to the Paris Agreement coincided with gathering of global policymakers in Madrid for the UN’s annual climate summit—many from nations committed to the Paris Agreement. The United States government has begun the formal withdrawal process from the Paris Agreement. However, as companies and unions representing millions of US workers, we are calling on the US Federal Government to stay in because we know that the climate crisis we are facing calls for greater, more accelerated action than ever before. The scale of the climate crisis is clear. From devastating droughts and flooding, to more destructive hurricanes and wildfires, the impacts can be felt in the U.S. and abroad. That’s why Mondelēz International is working hard to build a more sustainable supply chain and why we have committed to Science-Based Targets to reduce our carbon footprint all around the world. “Today’s letter is not only about how we can start to tackle these challenges, but also about the opportunity we have to take a stand and demonstrate our commitment to leading in sustainable snacking,” said our Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, Dirk van de Put. “One year ago, we launched our Purpose at MDLZ to Empower People to Snack Right and this is a perfect example of how our Purpose comes to life.”

Packaging

As part of a longterm commitment to reduce environmental impact, the company set 2025 packaging innovation targets to ensure 100% of packaging is designed to be recycled, contains on-pack recycling information and contributes to the company’s commitment to reduce CO2 emissions. Today, 93 percent of the company’s total packaging, including both plastic and non-plastic, is designed to be recycled. The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment has set ambitious 2025 targets which Mondelēz International, along with signatories from government, business and other organizations, has formally endorsed. As part of the Global Commitment, Mondelēz International will work towards the following: Take action to eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging by 2025 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable or recyclable Use 5% recycled content (by weight) across all plastic packaging used Take action to move from single-use towards reuse models where relevant As a member of the UK Plastics Pact, which is the first in a global network of Pacts which are aligned with, and support the New Plastics Economy initiative, Mondelēz International commits to working towards delivering the UK Plastics Pact 2025 targets by: Eliminating unnecessary and problematic packaging and plastic products Ensuring all plastic packaging is recyclable in practice Using recycled plastic in our packaging wherever possible Joining these initiatives furthers Mondelēz International’s 2025 sustainability goals which are focused on making snacks with less energy, water and waste. Already on track to reduce emissions across our manufacturing operations by 15 percent by the end of 2020, this expanded commitment will result in a further 10 percent emissions reduction across our value chain, over and above the impact of business growth from farm to shelf by 2025, compared to a 2018 baseline.
