Bec + Bridge Sustainability Actions

Carbon neutral shipping

Bec + Bridge says it gives free carbon neutral shipping for online orders. It uses Shopify Planet, a tool that estimates shipping emissions and sends money to carbon removal and storage projects. The brand names projects such as Grassroots Carbon, Running Tide, and Heirloom. This means the company is trying to balance out the emissions from delivery, although offsetting does not remove the emissions from shipping itself.

Packaging changes

The brand says it has removed non-recyclable parts from its packaging. It says its mailer bags are plant based and compostable, bridal boxes are made from recycled paper and can be recycled, and retail bags are made from sustainably sourced materials and are biodegradable. It also says swing tags are made from recycled paper. These changes are aimed at reducing waste from packaging after products are sold.

Supplier code of conduct

Bec + Bridge says it asks suppliers to sign a Supplier Code of Conduct. The code refers to safe and ethical working conditions, International Labour Organisation (ILO) principles, and rules on child labour, discrimination, harassment, forced labour, wages, and working hours. The brand also says it wants suppliers to tell it about subcontractors in the supply chain, which is the full path a product takes from raw materials to finished goods.

Textile waste partnerships

The brand says it works with UPPAREL, a textile recycling company, to reuse and repurpose excess stock and fabric offcuts. It also says fabric and end-of-life garments can be broken down into fibres and turned into other products, which helps keep textiles out of landfill. In 2023, it also offered in-store textile collections for old Bec + Bridge garments. This is a circular approach, meaning materials are kept in use for longer instead of being thrown away.

Donations and volunteering

Bec + Bridge says it supports Thread Together with financial and product donations and staff volunteering. Thread Together redistributes new and excess clothing to people in need, including people affected by homelessness, disaster, domestic violence, and unemployment. The brand also says it works with i=Change, where part of each online order is donated to selected causes. These actions focus on community support rather than product design, but they are still part of the brand’s wider social impact work.

Local manufacturing focus

The brand says it continues to prioritise Sydney-based makers and has worked with some of them for more than 15 years. It also says it tries to keep manufacturing in Australia when possible, but sometimes uses offshore suppliers when local makers cannot meet the needed scale or specialist work. Bec + Bridge says it wants visibility over production and the workers behind its garments. This shows a preference for local production, but it also admits that not all items can be made locally.
