Launched the Companion boot project

In 2023, Baffin launched the commercial version of its Companion boot project. The boot was first created as a donation-only item, then sold with a promise that 100% of profits would go to Protect Our Winters Canada, a group that supports climate policy. Baffin also said that for every pair sold, it would donate at least one pair to a North American organization in need. The boot was made in its Stoney Creek, Ontario factory and used recycled materials, regrind rubber (rubber ground up and used again), and donated raw materials from suppliers.

Used recycled rubber in production

Baffin said it regularly reuses rubber from boots that do not meet quality standards. In its 2023 announcement, the company said regular production boots use about 5% to 10% regrind material, while the Companion boot used 50% regrind material. This shows an effort to cut waste by putting leftover material back into production instead of sending it away. The company also said supplier donations helped support the project, which reduced the need for new raw material.

Donated boots to refugees

Baffin said it donated 2,500 pairs of cold-weather rubber boots to Ukrainian refugees through UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. This was part of its Corporate Citizenship Employee Advisory Group work. The donation was aimed at helping people who needed winter footwear in difficult conditions. While this is a social action rather than a product change, it is still part of the company’s wider sustainability and community support work.

Reduced waste through reuse

Baffin said it works to repurpose as much rubber as possible in its regular boot production. The company described this as a way to reduce waste by reusing material from boots that failed quality checks. This is a practical form of circularity, which means keeping materials in use for longer instead of throwing them away after one use. The source material does not give a full waste report, but it does show a clear effort to reuse production leftovers.
