Algramo is a Chilean company that has worked since 2013 on a business model focused on sustainability, social welfare, and circular consumption. Its model is built around reusable packaging, smart dispensing, and mobile technology to reduce waste and improve access to products for lower-income consumers. The company has described its approach as a way to address the “poverty tax” faced by vulnerable consumers who pay more for smaller-format goods. Algramo has also worked with Avery Dennison to redesign product distribution using RFID technology, mobile solutions, and electric vehicles as part of a circular supply chain.

Algramo Sustainability Actions

Reusable packaging model

Since its inception, Algramo has set out to make a radical change in the way people access products. At first, the system was based on the creation of own-brand products using a form of returnable packaging. This initiative not only reduced the final consumer expenses, but also increased recirculation of returnable containers.

Dispenser for bulk foods

The company also designed a dispenser prototype that offered food such as rice, lentils and beans in the right amounts that the customer required according to what he paid; thus eliminating unnecessary spending in vulnerable economies.

80% reuse rate

Although in its first stage, results showed an 80% reuse rate by consumers, and the company intensified its efforts to promote a change that goes beyond the already established network of shops and small stores.

RFID and mobile interface

The company worked together with Avery Dennison to launch an interface capable of taking this commercial concept to a higher level. The product distribution and acquisition modality was completely redesigned, implementing state-of-the-art RFID technology and mobile solutions that enabled a new consumer / product interaction.

Electric vehicle delivery

This new model was based on 3 main pillars: a smart reusable container integrated with an Avery Dennison RFID label; an Algramo app whereby consumers can request the purchase of products and manage their recharges, their virtual wallet and be aware of the environmental impact associated with their consumption; and a new “door-to-door” distribution structure made up of electric vehicles equipped with supply pumps and an RFID / NFC reader system.
